If you are a dedicated student of the Parelli Program and wish to understand the architecture and basic tenants of Pat’s philosophy here is the perfect place to start. Soak and ponder these principles and if you have any questions or confusions feel free to contact us for further explanation.
PRINCIPLE # 1:
Horsemanship is natural.
PRINCIPLE # 2:
Make AND teach no assumptions.
PRINCIPLE # 3.
Communication is two or more individuals sharing and understanding an idea.
PRINCIPLE # 4.
Horses and Humans have Mutual Responsibilities
Four for the Human:
1 Act like a partner, not like a predator. Become more mentally, emotionally and physically fit.
2 Have an independent seat.
3 Think like horse before you think like a human.
4 Use the natural power of focus.
And for the Horse:
1 Act like a partner, not like a prey animal. Become more mentally, emotionally and physically fit.
2 Maintain gait.
3 Maintain direction.
4 Look where you are going.
PRINCIPLE # 5:
The attitude of justice is effective.
PRINCIPLE # 6:
Body language is universal.
PRINCIPLE #7:
Horses teach riders and riders teach horses.
PRINCIPLE # 8:
Principles, purpose, and time are the tools of teaching.
I’m not new to Parelli but I am still a beginner. Two weeks ago I watched Neil Pye give a horsemanship demonstration and he talked about helping your horse become a ‘good citizen’ is how he described it.
It occurred to me that I don’t know, what a horse needs to know, in order to become a good horse.
What behaviours do I need to teach my horse in order for him to be considered ‘good’? (Other than to stand still)
Thanks Libby, we appreciate your feedback.
